Yellow Tools Independence
Yellow Tools finally brings its expertise in sample content creation to a fully blown software sampler. But can Independence make it on its own? Mark Cousins finds out.

The software sampler might have firmly established itself in the contemporary studio, but the race to find the ultimate software sampler has yet to be won. While early starters such as the EXS24 seem to be floundering, Tascam’s GigaStudio 3 and Native Instruments’ Kontakt 2 lead the way, demonstrating just how far we’ve come since the humble Akai S900. But with GigaStudio 3 still being PC-only and Kontakt 2 incorporating an increasing number of ‘developer-orientated’ features, there still seems to be a gap in the market for a powerful, easy-to-use software sampler. What musicians are crying out for is an application competent enough to handle cutting-edge sample-processing techniques, but with the simplicity and immediacy we’ve come to expect in the software age. Could Independence be the answer to our sampling dreams?
